The Detroit Tigers demoted rookie outfielder Daz Cameron to Triple-A Toledo ahead of Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.
Detroit needed to clear room on the 25-man roster to make room for Sunday’s starter, left-hander Matthew Boyd. Boyd (3-6, 3.44 ERA) was activated from the 60-day injured list and has been out since June 14 with a triceps injury.
Cameron, 24, is batting just .177 with three homers, 11 RBIs and 25 strikeouts in 25 games this season with the Tigers.
“We’ll take at least a 10-day period to get Daz’s rhythm, timing and his swing going in the right direction,” manager AJ Hinch said after Saturday night’s 3-2 loss to Toronto in 10 innings.
“He needs to play every day, something he’s not doing right now. Hopefully at some point between now and the end of the season, he gets more time up in the big leagues here.”
Cameron batted .193 with three RBIs in 17 games with Detroit in 2020. He is hitting .309 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 23 games this season at Toledo.
