Major League Baseball’s delayed plan to limit rosters to 13 pitchers finally will be instituted in 2022, USA Today reported.

The pitcher restriction was supposed to be put in place for the 2020 season but was put on hold when play resumed last season after the delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was again waived this season as the 162-game season was reinstated following the 60-game regular season from last year.

According to the report, MLB is considering further reductions, possibly to as little as 11 active pitchers on a roster at a time.

The pitcher limits are being implemented to counter rising velocity and strikeout rates. Strikeouts have increased every year since 2006, with 24.2 percent of at-bats this season ending in strikeouts, according to MLB Trade Rumors. That number is an almost 1 percent jump from last season.
