Corey ‘Homicide’ Williams was left in awe of Nick Kyrgios’ basketball ability at a sponsored event last week.
The 6’4 Kyrgios obviously has made a name for himself in the tennis world, but Williams believes the 26-year-old could hang in the Australian basketball scene.
“Kyrgios got a jump shot. I’ll put it to you like this. He shoots better than I shot as a pro. I promise you.”
“The weakness in my game was outside shooting. From what I saw with him, he’s got a jump shot. He hit like seven in a row. I was like, you really can hoop!
“The joy you see in his face playing, you know he loves the game. It reminded me of me! How much I loved the game when I was playing.
“He could play NBL1 right now. I don’t think he would look out of place.
“It ain’t luck when you’re hitting five or six threes in a row outside in the wind. He’d get a bucket in the NBL.
“They had a half court shooting competition. He hit both and won the prize.
“I was the judge. The first shot he hit, half court. Nothing but net. Anyone who was at the competition would have thought it was rigged.
“The second shot, he got it the second time to win the whole thing. He’s special and he has an authentic aura about him.”
Kyrgios made headlines in 2015, saying he did not love tennis and in fact preferred playing basketball.
I don’t really like the sport of tennis that much. I don’t love it. It was crazy when I was 14. I was all for basketball and I made the decision to play tennis. I got pushed by my parents and to this day I can still say I don’t love the sport,” he said.
“It’s good when you’re out there on a tennis court. There’s nowhere to hide. It’s all you, tactically, physically, mentally. But I just love basketball, I love the sport. I always have. I try when I’m on the road with tennis not to watch too many basketball videos and stuff like that, to keep me focused.”
