RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) — A brilliant second-half strike from forward Artur Guimaraes earned Bragantino a 1-1 draw with defending champions Flamengo in Brazil’s Serie A championship on Wednesday.
Former Fiorentina striker Pedro gave the visitors the lead with a first-time effort from an acute angle that beat goalkeeper Cleiton Schwengber at his far post.
The hosts equalized just before the hour mark when Guimaraes received a Leo Ortiz pass with his back to goal and took two touches before rifling an unstoppable 25-yard shot into the top right corner.
Despite the result, Flamengo rose one place to second in the 20-team standings, displacing Palmeiras, who lost 2-1 at America Mineiro earlier on Wednesday. Bragantino are sixth, four points further back.
In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Wednesday, Fortaleza won 2-0 at Fluminense, Internacional drew 0-0 at Ceara, Sport Recife prevailed 3-1 at home to Juventude, Athletico Paranaense won 2-0 at Atletico Goianiense and Chapecoense drew 2-2 at home to Atletico Mineiro.
