RIO DE JANEIRO, Sep. 3 (Xinhua) — Bragantino’s Artur Guimaraes and Leo Ortiz have been added to Brazil’s squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Peru, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on Friday.
Center-back Ortiz will reinforce Brazil’s defense following the suspension of Paris Saint-Germain’s Marinquinos while Guimaraes will provide head coach Tite with more options in attack after Malcom and Claudinho were ordered to return to Russia by Zenit Saint-Petersburg.
The uncapped pair joined the Brazil squad in Sao Paulo following the team’s 1-0 qualifying win over Chile in Santiago on Thursday.
Brazil will meet Argentina in Sao Paulo on Sunday and Peru in Recife on Thursday.
The five-time world champions have been weakened by the refusal of clubs in England and Russia to release players for the matches because of concerns about possible COVID-19 quarantine requirements.
