Drake men’s basketball is losing an assistant coach to the Big 12 Conference.
Larry Blunt has accepted an assistant coaching position at Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State announced his addition to the coaching staff on Monday.
Blunt was an integral part of Drake’s recruiting success these past three years. As a former head coach in the National Basketball League of Canada and at Orangeville Prep in Ontario, where he coached elite prep stars Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, Blunt has recruiting ties to Canada that make him an attractive asset for any coaching staff.
DeVries now has an opening to fill on his staff. Assistant coaches Marty Richter and Matt Gatens remain at Drake. Brady Ellingson, who played a season for the Bulldogs in 2018-19 after grad transferring from Iowa, is the program’s director of operations.
Drake is coming off a 26-5 season in which it earned its first NCAA Tournament berth in 13 years and first-ever at-large selection. They return every significant piece of that roster other than Yesufu, and they add immediate contributors in Omaha graduate transfer guard Ayo Akinwole and four-star freshman wing Tucker DeVries.
