Faf du Plessis will be playing in this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which is scheduled to take place in St Kitts & Nevis in August and September.
Du Plessis will represent the St Lucia Zouks in what will be his second CPL stint having played for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in 2016.
The former Proteas captain has been in great form in recent months for the Chennai Super Kings at the postponed Indian Premier League (IPL), where he scored 320 runs – including four half-centuries – in his seven IPL games.
Du Plessis has been away from the Proteas squad of late since retiring from Test cricket in February this year.
He will not be joining Mark Boucher’s touring squad which takes on the West Indies in five T20Is from 10 June to 3 July.
The 2021 CPL tournament gets under way on 28 August and runs until 19 September, which means it might not clash with the now rescheduled IPL set for September and October.
Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje is expected to make his CPL debut as he joins the Patriots alongside team-mate Rassie van der Dussen.
Van der Dussen, who missed out on last year’s tournament due to Covid-19, is playing in his second CPL stint after first appearing for the Patriots in 2018.
Another debutant includes 26-year-old Migael Pretorius for the Jamaica Tallawahs. Pretorius was called up to the Proteas Test squad against Sri Lanka earlier this season but was soon released after suffering an injury.
All 33 matches will be played at Warner Park in St Kitts, with the final set on 19 September.
South Africans expected to compete in the 2021 CPL:
Jamaica Tallawahs – Migael Pretorius
St Lucia Zouks – Faf du Plessis
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots – Rassie van der Dussen, Anrich Nortje
Barbados Tridents – Chris Morris
