England’s openers may have built a significant platform, but once they departed before lunch it left the stage clear to a White Rose middle order of Dawid Malan, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. Root and Malan (who joined the county from Middlesex last year) added 139 for the third wicket — the highest partnership for England between two Yorkshire players at Headingley — and Root and Bairstow put on a further 52 for the fourth wicket; between them they ensured their county were represented at the crease
