CVU’s Catherine Gilwee Vermont’s Gatorade girls basketball honoree

CVU senior Catherine Gilwee drives baseline during the Redhawks 44-27 win over the Comets earlier this season.

Champlain Valley senior Catherine Gilwee has been named the Vermont high school girls basketball player of the year, Gatorade announced Thursday.

Gilwee is the fifth player in program history to receive the award, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character.

The 5-foot-8 guard led the Redhawks to a 9-0 record this past season, averaging 12.1 points, 5.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game. Gilwee, who will play at the University of Vermont starting this fall, was also named the Burlington Free Press’ “Miss Basketball” in March.

Over her final two seasons at CVU, Gilwee led the Hinesburg powerhouse to a 30-0 mark,  though both postseasons were cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
