Cubs place RHP Trevor Williams (appendectomy) on IL

The Chicago Cubs placed Trevor Williams on the 10-day injured list following an emergency appendectomy and recalled fellow right-hander Kohl Stewart to start Monday’s home game against the San Diego Padres.

Williams, 29, will be unable to face his hometown team after joining a growing injury list in Chicago.

“Our starters have been throwing the ball well. Obviously, with Trevor going down, that’s a hit for us,” fellow pitcher Jake Arrieta said. “We wish him a speedy recovery.”

Williams owns a 3-2 record with a 5.36 ERA in 10 starts this season. He sports a 34-39 career record with a 4.50 ERA in 116 games (104 starts) with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs.

Stewart, 26, owns a 1-2 record with a 3.68 ERA in four starts this season with Triple-A Iowa. He has a 4-3 career record with a 4.79 ERA in 17 appearances (six starts) with the Minnesota Twins from 2018-19.
