If basketball is new to you, this video will help give you an idea of the goal of the game. First, I’m going to give you some information about the court layout. Basketball is played on a court that is rectangular shaped. It is 94 feet long, and 50 feet wide with a basket on each side. The baskets are 10 feet high.
A basketball is made of rubber and is larger than a soccer ball. The basketball has different seams that help with grip. There are many different lines on a basketball court. There is an arc that looks like a smiley face at each end of the court. It is 19 feet and 9 inches from the basket.
Any shot inside of the three-point arc counts is two points. Any shot behind the arc counts as three points. Now I am going to give you some of the ideas about how the game is played.
In a game of basketball, there are two teams. Each team is trying to score on one of the hoops. The team that has the ball is trying to score by passing, dribbling, and shooting at their basket. The team that does not have the ball is trying to play defense by not letting the other team score. If a player with the ball wants to move, they must dribble.
Dribbling is the act of bouncing the ball on the floor repeatedly in order to move on to the basketball court. Once the plater dribbling stops and picks up the ball they cannot dribble again or that is a violation called a double dribble. If the player with the ball moves or runs without dribbling that is another violation called traveling.
The player must either pass to a teammate or shoot towards the basket once they pick up their dribble. When playing defense, there cannot be any physical contact or that is a foul. A game of basketball four quarters that are eight minutes long. The team that has the most points at the end of the fourth quarter wins the game.
