The trousers in question, as seen with a Sept. 9 – Sept. 13 delivery window on Farfetch at the time of this writing, features check boxer detail atop a pair of grey sweats with a loose fit. As seen in a hands-on clip, the “boxer detail” is designed to be visible above the waistline of the sweats. Notably, the phrase itself—“trompe l’oeil”—translates to “optical illusion” in English.
On Farfetch, the bottoms are currently going for $1,190, which is in line with the usual Balenciaga price point. The design itself, however, has received pushback for—in the words of one Twitter user—being an example of “gentrified sagging.”
While this doesn’t mark the first time Balenciaga’s design choices have been at the center of an impassioned Twitter conversation, more recent news on the Paris-based luxury house has focused on the unrelated work from creative director Demna Gvasalia in collaboration with Kanye West as part of the extended Donda rollout.
